The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has announced that the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) will be implemented for all classes in Goa Board–affiliated schools starting from the 2026–27 academic year. This change will affect students from the earliest grades to secondary school, bringing a fresh and modern approach to learning.
Until now, the NEP framework was introduced in phases and applied only to Classes 3, 6, 9, and 10. According to The Times of India, the Goa Board has now decided to extend these reforms to the remaining classes as well. A circular issued by the Goa State Council of Educational Research and Training (GSCERT) confirms that students in Classes 1–2, 4–5, and 7–8 will also follow the NEP structure from 2026–27.
One of the best parts of NEP 2020 is its focus on learning beyond textbooks. For students in Classes 1 and 2, the school day will include activities like art and craft, sports, yoga, reading, and gardening along with regular subjects. These are now part of the official timetable, helping children learn through play, movement, and creativity.
The new system brings a clearer and more organised timetable for all schools. Each class period will be 40 minutes long, excluding assembly and recess time. Schools are required to complete a fixed number of teaching hours every day, ensuring that students get enough time to understand concepts without feeling rushed.
Under NEP 2020, schools will focus more on internal assessments. Instead of depending only on final exams, teachers will regularly assess students through classwork, activities, projects, and practical learning. This helps track progress throughout the year and reduces pressure on students.
To support the new learning system, new textbooks prepared by GSCERT will be introduced in schools. The content has been planned carefully to avoid overload. Steps are also being taken to reduce schoolbag weight by limiting unnecessary pages and using notebooks more efficiently, making school life healthier and more comfortable for students.
Bringing NEP 2020 to all classes is a positive step for Goa’s education system. The focus on understanding, creativity, life skills, and student well-being means children are being prepared not just for exams, but for real life. From 2026–27 onwards, classrooms in Goa are set to become more engaging, balanced, and student-friendly.
